Music at MIS.

The first rotation for the year has just finished. 80 students have been coming to music 3x every 6 days. They have covered a lot. As well as learning the basics of reading and writing music (which is a great skill to pick up) the students have learned to play at least 6 easy pieces on the keyboard. The music room has 18 keyboards which all have earphones. This means that you can play and practice- but no one else can hear you. Mistakes don’t matter!

The students have also learned a few chords on both the guitar and the ukulele. There has been lots of singing to go with the guitar strumming.

Another part of the music lessons that is very popular is learning about composers and musicians from way back when up till modern times. People/groups covered during the last six weeks have been Brooke Fraser, Bob Marley, Chopin, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Kimbra, Ladyhawke, Harry Belafonte, Paul Dukas’ “Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, Edvard Greig, Adele, Elvis Presley, Johan Sebastian Bach and Michael Jackson.

Being a composer has been a highlight of the work. Students had to compose a piece for the keyboard complete with an interesting ‘Voice’ and a creative bass rhythm. The performances of these finished pieces was amazing!
